It reads the plate, checks it against an allowlist stored on the camera, and fires an output to open the gate. No server is needed. (S1, S2)
What's in the kit
| Spec | Result |
|---|---|
| Camera | 2 MP dome, 1/2.8 in sensor, varifocal 3.4–9.8 mm, F1.4–2.7, 100°–32° horizontal (S1) |

The relay
The camera has no relay. Its I/O connector has a 12 V DC power-out pin (max 25 mA) and an open-drain digital output that switches to ground (max 30 V DC, 100 mA). (S1, S5) That is enough to drive a sensitive relay coil. The Altronix RBSN coil draws 15 mA at 12 V DC, leaving 10 mA of margin, and its DPDT contacts are rated 2 A at 28 V DC. (S4)
| Spec | Result |
|---|---|
| Camera 12 V out | 12 V DC, max 25 mA (S5) |

Power and PoE
| Spec | Result |
|---|---|
| P3285-LVE Kit | PoE 802.3af/802.3at Type 1 Class 3, max 10 W, typical 3.4 W (S1) |
| P3285-LVE network | RJ45 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX PoE (S1) |
| Relay coil load on the camera | 15 mA of the 25 mA 12 V output (S4, S5) |
Mount the camera
- Lane. One lane, vehicles at up to 30 km/h (19 mph). (S1)
- Distance. Capture range is 2–7 m (7–23 ft) from the camera to the plate. (S1)
- Height. For access control, mount at half the capture distance: 1 m at 2 m, 1.5 m at 3 m, 2 m at 4 m, 2.5 m at 5 m, 3.5 m at 7 m. The kit datasheet lists up to 2 m (7 ft) height and up to 2 m from the road. (S1, S3)
- Sun. Avoid aiming into sunrise or sunset. (S3)
- Plate size. Zoom so plates are at least 130 pixels wide (one-row) or 70 pixels (two-row). (S1)
- Assistant. Run the built-in capture assistant. It sets video for height, distance and vehicle speed, and the camera detects its own tilt and roll. (S1)
Wire the relay to the gate
| Terminal | Connects to |
|---|---|
| P3285-LVE RJ45 | PoE switch port (S1) |
| Camera I/O pin 2 (12 V DC out) | RBSN coil + (S4, S5) |
| Camera I/O pin 4 (digital output) | RBSN coil - (S4, S5) |
| Diode across the coil | Cathode to coil +, anode to coil - (S5) |
| RBSN C (common) | Gate operator open-input common (S4) |
| RBSN NO | Gate operator open input (S4) |
- Leave the jumper. The RBSN ships set for 12 V DC. Don't cut J1. (S4)
- Coil. Run the camera's 12 V out (pin 2) to the coil +, and the digital output (pin 4) to the coil -. When the output goes active it pulls the coil to ground and the relay closes. (S5)
- Diode. Axis calls for a diode in parallel with a relay on the output to protect against voltage transients. Fit it across the coil, cathode to +. (S5)
- Contacts. Wire one pole's C and NO to the operator's dry, momentary open input. Stay at or under 2 A, 28 V DC. (S4)
- Mount. Put the relay in a weatherproof box at the camera, rated -25 °C to 55 °C. (S4)
- Keep safety devices. Leave the operator's photo eyes and edges in place.
Set up AXIS License Plate Verifier
- Open the app. Camera webpage › Settings › AXIS License Plate Verifier. (S3)
- Region and area. Select the region, then drag the area of interest over the stop zone and set its direction. (S3)
- Access control. Settings › Access control › Internal I/O. Select the I/O output wired to the relay. (S3)
- Barrier mode. Open from lists › Allowlist. Vehicle direction › in. Pick the area of interest. (S3)
Build the allowlist
- Add plates. From Home, add detected plates to a list, or type them into the Allowlist under List management. (S3)
- Import. Load a .csv with license plate, date, description per line. Don't use less-than, greater-than or ampersand symbols. (S3)
- Capacity. Each list holds 10,000 plates, 30,000 total. (S1)
- Schedule. List management › list › Schedule. Set days and times, enable, save. (S3)
- Matching. Use the app's settings for exact match, fewer characters, or more than one character of deviation. (S3)
Test
- Allowlisted car at the stop line by day: gate opens
- Repeat at night
- Unknown plate: logged, gate stays shut
- Car leaving: no open on the "in" rule
- Photo eyes and edges stop and reverse the gate
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown vehicles accepted | Barrier mode or matching too loose | Barrier mode Open from lists › Allowlist; turn on exact match (S3) |
| No reads | Plate under 130 px, or outside 2–7 m | Zoom in; move the camera (S1) |
| Read, but no open | Internal I/O output not selected, or coil miswired | Check Access control › Internal I/O; check pins 2 and 4 (S3, S5) |
| Opens on exit | Vehicle direction | Set direction to in (S3) |
| Reads fail at sunrise or sunset | Direct sun in the image | Re-aim the camera (S3) |
| Relay clicks, gate doesn't move | Wrong operator terminals | Use C and NO to the operator's dry open input (S4) |

FAQs
Does the camera have a built-in relay?
No. Its I/O output drives a low-current relay such as the Altronix RBSN (15 mA coil), whose dry contact opens the gate. (S4, S5)
Where is the allowlist stored?
On the camera, in AXIS License Plate Verifier. (S1, S3)
How fast can cars move?
Up to 30 km/h (19 mph) in one lane. (S1)
Is a server or license needed?
No. The license is included and the reads run on the camera. (S1)
