Why can't I set the IP address or reach my Axis camera remotely, and how do I view it from outside

Quick answer

If you can't set an Axis camera's IP address, the camera and your computer are probably on different subnets or the address is already in use; ping it with the camera unplugged to check. If you can't log in, try HTTP and HTTPS explicitly. If DHCP moved it, find it with AXIS IP Utility or AXIS Device Manager.

Steps

From: P3265-LVE Dome Camera manual, pp. 28, 30

  1. Check the subnet
If the IP address you want for the camera and your computer's IP address are on different subnets, you can't set it. Get an address in the right range from the network administrator.
  2. Test for a conflict
Disconnect the camera, then in a command window type ping and the IP address. A Reply means another device has the address; Request timed out means it is free.
  3. Watch for the default static address
The camera uses its static IP before DHCP assigns one, so two devices with the same default static address can conflict on the same subnet.
  4. Find a camera that DHCP moved
DHCP addresses can change. Use AXIS IP Utility or AXIS Device Manager and identify the camera by model, serial number or DNS name, then assign a static IP if you need one.
  5. Fix login problems
With HTTPS enabled, type http or https in the browser's address field to use the right protocol. If the root password is lost, reset the camera to factory default.
  6. Fix 802.1X certificate errors
By syncing the camera's date and time with an NTP server under System > Date and time.
  7. Set up remote viewing
To access the camera externally, use AXIS Camera Station Edge (free, for small systems) or AXIS Camera Station Pro (90-day trial, small to mid-size systems), from axis.com/vms.

Common mistakes

From: P3265-LVE Dome Camera manual, pp. 29-30

  • Uploading the wrong AXIS OS file. If an upgrade fails the camera reloads the previous version; check the file name matches the model.
  • Problems right after an upgrade: roll back to the previous version from the Maintenance page.
  • Typing the address without the protocol when HTTPS is on. The browser may try the wrong one and the login fails.
