How do I wire a keypad on a VISTA-20P

Quick answer

Run four-conductor cable from the VISTA-20P keypad terminals to the keypad and match the colors: black to terminal 4 (AUX –), red to terminal 5 (AUX +), green to terminal 6 (data in) and yellow to terminal 7 (data out). Every keypad and other addressable device shares those same terminals. Each keypad needs its own unique address, from 16 to 23, and the system supports up to 8 keypads.

Steps

From: VISTA-20P/15P Security Systems install guide, pp. 10-11

  1. Use the keypad terminals
Connect keypads and other addressable devices (4204, 4219, 4229, 5881, GSMV4G, etc.) to the control's keypad terminals as shown on the Summary of Connections diagram.
  2. Land the four wires
Black to terminal 4 (–), red to terminal 5 (+), green to terminal 6 (data IN) and yellow to terminal 7 (data OUT). Use the same colors at the keypad.
  3. Set the address
Each keypad must be assigned a unique, predefined address, from 16 to 23. The first keypad is address 16 (default = partition 1, all sounds enabled). Set it at the keypad following the instructions included with it.
  4. Program the keypad
Use data fields *190-*196 in the Programming Guide to enable keypad addresses, assign keypad partitions and select sounding options. The system supports up to 8 keypads in any combination of partitions.
  5. Check wire length
Use the wire run chart: with #22 wire, a run drawing 50 mA or less can go 900 ft (274m), but at 500 mA only 90 ft (27m). All wire runs for both partitions combined must not exceed 1500 feet (457m) with unshielded quad conductor cable, or 750 feet with shielded cable.
  6. Add power if needed
If the keypads draw more than the auxiliary output can supply, power some from a supplementary power supply. Connect the negative (–) terminal on the power supply unit to terminal 4 (AUX –) on the control, and power at least one keypad in each partition from the control's auxiliary power output.

Common mistakes

From: VISTA-20P/15P Security Systems install guide, pp. 10-11

  • Two keypads on the same address: each keypad must have its own predefined address from 16 to 23.
  • Long or shared runs dropping out: the 1500 foot limit is due to the capacitive effect on the data lines when quad cable is used.
  • Supplementary supply not referenced: tie its negative (–) terminal to terminal 4 (AUX –) on the control.
